THE NABOISHO CONSERVATION MODEL

A Community-Owned Future for People & Wildlife

Naboisho is a pioneering model of community-led conservation.
Over 700 Maasai landowners have united to dedicate their land to wildlife protection while retaining ownership through a unique leasing model. In return, they benefit directly from long-term lease payments, access to improved grazing practices, community services and jobs. With its community-centred approach, Naboisho is a living blueprint that balances nature, people and purpose, sustained by ongoing collaboration, trust and long-term commitment.

How We Make It Work

Community empowerment, wildlife protection and sustainable tourism are the three driving forces behind Naboisho’s conservation success. These pillars are deeply interconnected, each one reinforcing the others to create lasting impact.

By placing local communities at the centre, Naboisho ensures that conservation delivers real, tangible benefits from livelihoods to education and healthcare. At the same time, the land is protected for wildlife to thrive, with tourism carefully managed to support both ecological integrity and community wellbeing.

Why It Matters

Global biodiversity is collapsing: the planet has lost nearly 70% of its wildlife in the last 50 years.

In Kenya’s Greater Mara—home to 25% of the country’s remaining wildlife land fragmentation, overgrazing and unchecked development threaten the ecosystem. Naboisho and its neighboring conservancies are reversing the trend through a bold, community-owned model that protects nature and empowers the people who depend on it. Together, they’re reshaping conservation across the region.

It's working. But lasting impact demands continued support.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MODEL

Governance & Management

A representative board of Maasai landowners and tourism partners sets policy, while a dedicated management team oversees all aspects of community relations, wildlife protection, overall ecosystem health and high standards of responsible tourism.

On Naboisho,
the land speaks.
And people listen.

Together,
we create a future
where all life has a place.
